Christmas Spirit Warms The Heart
“Clink” Jodi barely looks up from her book. The car engine blossoms in sound and zooms off towards the tunnel. Her little booth stays unchanged. The mini Christmas fibre optic tree still blinks on and off the fat furry caterpillars of tinsel still glitter and glow in the harsh light of the bare bulb hanging from the flimsy ceiling. Her “Santa Stop here.” sign still stands on a jaunty angle facing out into the dark.
Late night on the toll is not the most challenging of jobs a person can do. Jodi didn’t care. She just wanted to spend time by herself and to read.
She barely has to do anything one or twice she might have to produce some change but then not many cars came across so late at night. Least not through the old fashioned pay booth.
The taxis taking revellers to Liverpool clubs and parties zoom through the mechanical card gates. In fact most people this day used the card gates one swipe of a special access card or your credit card and you’re through. No searching for change involved. The manned booth was only kept on for the older generation really and those who have come out without their cards. A small fraction of the population by day but by night? Jodi could count the number of cars through most nights on her hands and some nights on just one finger.
Jodi was reading. Jodi was nigh on always reading actually. Tonight she was thumbing through one of those old classics. She isn’t a reading snob she’ll read anything that holds her attention. It just happens that Jane Eyre is one of those books. Jodi has devoured books since she was old enough to recognise letters. She would read anything and everything as a child and often beg stole and borrowed books to feed her craving.
Now I am sure you are thinking late night toll booth work must be lonely. In fact anyone who ever does say anything to Jodi usually says “Don’t you get lonely out here on your own all night love?” And Jodi always replies that she has her books so she’s never alone.
Jodi has been dealing with spending a lot of time on her own for many years. She came from a single parent family and her mother was drunk 90% of the time and passed out on the sofa for a good 70% of that time. Jodi just got on with life. She got herself to and from school from being 4 years of age and kept the house too. She was responsible for everything in her life and the life of her mother and she kept on top of everything. She would go with her mum to pick up her benefit and make sure she got money to buy food and pay bills. Her mum was happy as long as she had enough money to drink herself slowly to death day by day.
She eventually fulfilled that ambition and Jodi dealt with the death with cold responsible efficiency. At the age of sixteen She was looking after herself in her own home working to earn money and going to college to further her education. At eighteen she got the toll booth job and the toll booth job has kept her in books and DIY material for her home for the past 5 years.
Jodi is good at looking after herself and this is probably why she is single and has no friends to speak off. She can only trust herself and so she cuts herself off from the rest of the world. Don’t get me wrong Jodi is friendly and polite. She will talk to anyone and pass the time of day with them. She will help anyone in need or distress and she never complains. She just won’t let anyone get close to her.
“Excuse me?” A timid male voice echoes from outside her booth. She looks up and through the be-tinsled window and past the mini Christmas tree and looks down on a guy in a car. She opens her window to let in the rush of cold night air and says:
“Hello there! My name is Jodi how may I help you?” don’t you just love patter?
“I’ve just come from work and I’ve got no change.” He stammers “Well in fact I have no money at all.” His cheeks flush and he looks down to the side of his deep blue ford escort.
Jodi got fee jumpers coming through on a regular basis. It depended on her mood at the time as to whether she’d let them through. This fellow looked genuine enough. He was embarrassed to have to be asking and the look of desperation in his Christmas blue ice eyes seems genuine
“Well Since it is the season and all that!” Jodi picked up a couple of coins and slipped them into the slot the gate responds swiftly and quietly lifting up out of the way.
“Thank you so very much Jodi!” The man says as he puts his car into gear “Thanks a lot.” the smile he flashes her way is enough to make her tummy do flip flops combine it with the way he actually remembered and said her name and well she was a goner. She may be keen on staying single but Jodi was partial to a good crush. A bit of fantasy to make her heart pound appeals to Jodi and what does it matter that not one of these crushes had ever turned into something more not even a kiss? No one wanted to kiss a weird loner like her.
The next night Jodi was in her booth again this time she had something a bit more modern in her hand. Bridget Jones’s diary. It was one of her favourites and would come out whenever she felt the burning hot sensation of fancying some random fellow. Bridget Jones came out once or twice a year and reading it would often make Jodi Snort and laugh out loud.
“Good book?” A voice startles her from her reading and it is him No Toll man.
“Not bad thanks!” She replies smiling
“I’ve got my change tonight!” he replies waving a big fluffy gloved hand at her inside of which is a pile of coins. “I’ve got what I owe you here too.”
“Oh it’s ok!” I smile. “No need to repay me.”
“Are you sure?” he replies looking up at me quizzically his light brown hair taking on a bronze halo like glow in the bright street light
“Positive.” Jodi replies nodding her head in emphasis making her angel earrings dance and jingle.
“Ok.” He smiles “I’ll put it in the charity pot at work.”
“Where do you work to be coming home so late?” Jodi asked the question slipping easily from her lips. “If you don’t mind me asking that is…”
“Oh I work in the children’s hospice.” he replies “I work from around 6pm to 5/6am most days.”
“ahh right. Sorry for being nosey!”
“Oh I don’t mind.” He smiles “It’s nice to be talked to by an adult once in a while you know?”
“Yeah. I know” Jodi replies. Knowing more than he can realise.
“My name is Mike.” he adds as he slips the change into the machine. “See you Jodi!”
“Bye Mike.” She calls as he rolls up his window and rolls through the lifted barrier.
Mike. Nice to have a name to go with the fantasy.
Jodi began to look forward to seeing Mike each night well morning really around 5am. She found herself in her smarter work gear more and more pretty tops and trousers instead of the sloppy trakkie bottoms and sweater she would often throw on.
Today she is wearing a v-neck sweatshirt in a deep dark forest (Christmas) green that she feels highlights her soft pale eiderdown skin and makes her similarly coloured eyes stand out. She has her favourite Santa earrings on they looks jolly from the front Santa smiling hung over the edge of the hoop at the back however you see the tops of his buttocks above his pants and a shocked ginger cat with its claws stuck into Santa’s ass.
5 am came and passed and no sign of Mike. Jim however just turned up and took over for the morning shift. 7 am already! Just as Jodi was saying bye to Jim a familiar car pulled up at the booth.
“Hey Mike!” She called “you’re late today aren’t you?”
“Oh hey Jodi!” Mike smiles and puts his car into reverse making it growl and spit like an angry cat. He brings it to a stand still away form the toll gate. “Yeah it’s the Christmas thing. So many folks want time off around now I did some covering today and stayed on a few hours. Are you finishing now?”
“Yeah.” She replies smiling her heart thumping
“Do you fancy finding somewhere that serves up good greasy artery-seizing food?”
“Well yeah that’d be nice!” Jodi replies with a smile and walks round to the passenger side of the car. Waiting for the click she climbs in. “I thought you’d gone automatic!” She quips as the window rolls up and they drive off into the tunnel.
“God no!” he replies “I can’t afford that kind of money up front. That’s why I stick to the good old coin toll. And I like the personal service you get with it. I don’t really trust computers.”
Jodi was fairly positive there was a compliment in there and her cheeks reacted to it on impulse flushing red making her look somewhat like Great Aunt Sally but without the pigtails.
“I’ve never been one for computers either.” She confides “I hated using them in college. What’s wrong with good old pen and paper? And E-books. Don’t even get me started.”
“I notice you read a lot.” Mike adds carefully keeping in his lane his eyes glued to the road in front. “I don’t have much time to read now but I used to read so much.”
A pleasant conversation on favourite books and authors ensues and Jodi settles back in the worn seventies brown passenger seat and looks out into the tunnel around her. The light does strange things down here it is as if it knows it’s under water. As you look around and everything takes on the hue of an aquarium crossed with a public pool (the influence of all those white tiles probably) and you get to a point you think you’ll see a shoal of fish coming by at any moment.
Coming out into the early start of dawn the black of the sky tinged with lighter grey edges the stars fading back and the streetlights mellowing from maintenance team coat neon to milder pure breakfast orange juice tones.
“Where are we going?” Jodi asks wondering how she’s going to get back home from here the centre of Liverpool she didn’t quite know having never ventured far away from the shopping centre of Liverpool before.
“Oh just a little Café.” Mike smiles “I can drop you back off at Lime Street after breakfast if that’s ok.”
“Oh that would be great!” Jodi lets out a sigh her trusty trio ticket would get her home on the train from there.
“So what are you doing for Christmas?” Mike asks pulling up in a quiet slightly dog-eared street. It looked smart but in a left in the cupboard and long forgotten kind of way.
“Oh nothing. “ She replies “My Mum died years ago I never had a father and I have no other family I know of so it will just be me and a turnkey again!” She quips
“Oh.” Mike replies an answer Jodi is used to. She never beats around the bush she tells people up front all about her life and leaves it up to them to deal with it. “I’m on my own this year too.” He says “well every year really. I was an orphan you know. Never knew my family. So I don’t really miss them. Sounds callous I know but it’s true.”
A silence falls but it isn’t awkward it is the silence of two kindred spirits recognising each other and their pain and need and search for love. It is just how it should be two comments that say so much need space to expand into.
The greasy spoon is “The Greasy Spoon.” A small red fronted café with a yellowing “Open” sign in the window. Walking in you’re hit by the smell first mostly grease with a hint of bacon and the sound second. You can her the crick-crack of the bacon frying and that’s it. The room is silent. The third thing you become aware of is that every eye in the place is on you.
“Oh Hey Mikey!” a harsh spittle filled male voice pipes up. “Who’s the skirt?”
“Hey Lee.” Mike replies “This is my friend Jodi.” “Aw Eh Jodi!” Lee leers at her his dark beady eyes running over her frame “It’s real nice to meetcha.” He wipes his hand on his apron and offers it to her form behind the old brown melamine counter. She takes the proffered hand and shakes it warily and very conscious of the sticky feeling of his fingers on hers. “Whatcha Having Mike?” His focus is changed as he sweeps a small stub of yellow HB pencil down from behind his ears. Jodi hadn’t seen it there till that point because his large ears stick out so much from his bald head.
“I’ll have my usual Lee. He replies and Jodi will have….?”
“A Big breakfast extra bacon no tomatoes -I don’t entertain fruit in my fry ups.” Lee looks at her with new found awe. “Oh and a big mug of tea and a couple of rounds of toast. Cheers.”
“Well Lee really likes you!” Mike Says as he sits down on one of the melded to the floor plastic chairs (chocolate/ shit brown depending on your point of view) smiling over the was once white melamine table top.
“Is that a good thing?” Jodi asks a giggle in her voice
“Well Yes. It means you’ll get bigger portions and they’ll be properly cooked. Lee likes me and I’m not dead yet!”
When the food came it looked interesting. Jodi wondered what the bad option would look like. Grease in her mind was meant to be consumed in vast quantities now and then all in one go. This was her grease ration for the whole of next year!
“This is a first.” Jodi says after munching on the corner of a piece of stiff fried bread “I’ve never been to breakfast with a customer before.” “Well it’s good to know I am a unique experience.” He replies “And I have never been to breakfast with a beautiful Tool Booth assistant either.”
The compliment didn’t go unnoticed and Jodi’s cheeks flushed as red as the thin cheap tinsel festooned across the window beside them.
After this grease she thought she’d be turning as green as the cotton covered baubles too.
Again silence where both parties assessed their opposite numbers. Neither had really seen the other in daylight before so now morning had truly broken they were seeing each other in literally a new light.
Jodi though Mike looked a little nerdier in the light of day but under the bright white top he was wearing she could see the outline of his surprisingly pert looking muscles.
Mike saw the very dark green of Jodi’s eyes properly and was amazed by the intensity in them. She looked paler by daylight but also much more delicate.
Both decided they liked what they saw and continued to munch away happily forking in fried egg and bacon as if it were their dying meal. The radio suddenly blared into real audio range and Jodi found herself singing along
“A beautiful sight we’re happy tonight” and Mike joined in with the “Walking in a winter wonderland.”
“I like Christmas.” Jodi says “I like the pretty decorations” then raising her hand and leaning in “present company excepted” she whispered eyeing the tatty Christmas tree and its few dog-eared baubles “And the food. Ooh I love the food. I’m making mince pies tomorrow. A few hundred of’em probably for the old folks by me. It’s my festive good will thing. I’ve made the Christmas cakes already I’ll ice those and bake mince pies.”
“That’s thoughtful of you.” Mike says smiling “It must take a long time to bake all that.”
“Well not really.” She replies “And I enjoy it. I love the smiles on the old dears faces as I bring them their Christmas treats. So many of them are on state pension and can barely afford to feed themselves let alone buy luxuries. I see it as doing my bit you know?”
Mike nods his head.
“I mean you can always think that someone else is looking after the poor and needy of the world and go on with your life. But what if no one really is? I think it’s best to make sure and do something myself. I’ll bake some cookies for the kids at your place if you think they’d like them.”
“Oh they’d love cookies.” Mike said smiling “Thank you. I’ll take them in on Christmas day with their presents.”
“You give them all presents?” Jodi asks
“Well yeah but someone else gives them to me first. I just take them into work for the ten or so kids who are normally still with us. Some just are too sick to go home to parents others just don’t have them.”
“So Santa drops them down your chimney eh?” Jodi quips “You should give him directions to get there himself.”
“I have” Mike replies seemingly in all seriousness “But he says it’s better that I take them in.”
Jodi giggles but then she notes the not so funny look on his face.
“Ahhhh.” She smiles “Some kind benefactor guy drops them off at yours then like like an anonymous donation right?
“Sort of the benefactor IS Santa though. Really. The last couple of years he’s been waiting for me when I got in from work with a big sack of presents. Every time he poses for a picture and every time I take the photo to work it just looks like some plump old man in a false beard.” He laughs a little awkwardly “I mean working on the toll Surely you’ve seen him or does he have a pass?”
Jodi chuckles “He flies Silly. No need for using the tunnel! But yeah I did see him I think last year. I was in my little booth and it was so cold. My heater had packed in and I couldn’t get it to work. I was taking more than a little nip of the home made egg nog I’d brought in with me that night to see in the festive season and I swear I heard bells. So I opened up my now frosty window and there was a pack a heard a whatever of reindeer pulling a big bright red sleigh with massive sacks on the back and well Santa in the middle.
“Ho Ho Ho” The guy said beaming “Merry Christmas Jodi!” And then he flew off. The heater came back on and the room was instantly warm again. A big plate of delicious food was sat steaming on the side too. My God it was the most delicious meal I have ever eaten.”
Jodi stops for breath and Mike is nodding his head and smiling
“I thought I might have had far too much egg nog though but it seemed too real to be a dream you know?”
“Yeah I totally know.” Mike agreed.
Before they split company they arranged to meet again in a few days time for a Christmas day Drink and a chat. They didn’t talk about spending day time hours together but Jodi hoped he would come round to hers for the day. She would buy in extra turkey and trimmings just in case. If he doesn’t turn up well there will be plenty of leftovers to curry for herself then.
Christmas Eve is here well technically it is Christmas day as it is past midnight and Jodi is sipping on her second glass of Homemade egg nog. Which is something impressive as many people have passed out before they’ve finished the first one before now. Although Aunty Betty a lovely old lady who she takes a delivery of Christmas food to swears by it and makes a massive batch of it every winter. Keeps the chill off apparently. Well She’s been making it for the past 5 years and she’s heading up to her 90th birthday so maybe she’s right.
It is definitely keeping the chill off Jodi her cheeks have a hint of dark pinkie red to them and she is dancing around her little toll booth singing to herself. Well Dancing in one place really as will the addition of a tall stool for Mike to sit on when he calls in after work there is not much floor space left.
“I don’t want a lot for Christmas” She croons as she replenishes the plate of mince pies and Christmas cake before her. She’d only had a few cars through this eve one full of student party revellers who adored her baking so much they came back for seconds and a car filled with a young family off to visit family for the holidays. She gave the children special Santa shaped cookies and listened as they breathlessly told her all about what they’d asked Father Christmas for this year. “All I want for Christmas is yoooooouuuuuuuuuu!”
“Well I wouldn’t mind you in my stocking either.”
It was Mike Smiling in at her.
“Oh hey!” She giggles “Come on in the egg nog’s fine!”
“I can see!” mike Smiles back and makes his way round the back of the booth squeezing past Jodi to sit on the stool making her tummy do roll-overs in the process.
“You’ve finished Early.” Jodi smiles as Mike takes off his bulky coat hanging it on the back of the door and making the space even cosier.
“Oh yeah. It was so weird. A new guy started today he was only a short chap and well apparently he’s working tomorrow all day too. So yeah I’ve been given the rest of that day off.
“Cool.” Jodi nods and smiles. Now she was nigh on certain the lure of her specially basted turkey and home made stuffing would lure him in. Then maybe he’d give her a stuffing. She knew she was tipsy just by thinking that. She usually holds all her wanton thoughts in and doesn’t even dare to think them. The egg nog must be doing it’s trick.
She pours another glug for herself and a fills a glass well a plastic cup for Mike too.
“Mmm that’s yummy.” he remarks taking a sip of the unctuous concoction “Have you been busy tonight? Has Santa been through yet?”
“Ho Ho Ho!” Jodi Quips and elbows Mike teasingly in the ribs “No not yet. But there’s time yet.”
“Aye when do you finish tonight?”
“Well basically when I want really. Christmas Day we just leave the barrier up here so anyone can pass through So I am free to go whenever I like but only after midnight.”
“Fair do’s.”
“Well if you want we can go to my place and have some more egg nog and nibbles and stuff.” Jodi smiles coyly
“Well that sounds cool. It’s a bit erm snug here isn’t it?”
“It’s bloody cramped!” Jodi snorts slightly and in doing so decides it’s time to stop consuming the egg nog at least for a while anyway. “let’s go. You driving?”
“Yeah.” Mike replies “I’ve only had a sip of that egg nog. Blimey Jodi it’s strong!” “Thank you!” she beams taking it as a compliment. “A sip shouldn’t take you over the limit.”
Mike opens the door and holds it open as he was taught to do. He couldn’t understand these women who think it degrading to allow a man to help them. It just seemed like a refusal of common courtesy he would hold the door open for man woman or beast. No sexism there.
He was feeling nervous he said “Yes” to Jodi’s invite on a whim but he wondered if maybe he was taking advantage of her clearly tipsy state? Well he wouldn’t take advantage. Lord no. He’d gone without carnal indulgence for this long he’d not push his advances on someone who was not interested now. What worried him was the fact she might be a little shocked to find herself with a bumbling virgin. Surely a beauty such as Jodi would be far more experienced than himself.
Mike obviously didn’t realise that Jodi was thinking those exact thoughts herself. Being a loner for so long mean she’d never gotten this close to a guy before never invited one home for egg nog nibbles and “stuff” ever. Ahh well. There’s always a first time right?
As Mike rev’s up the engine Jodi smiles
“She takes a bit of encouragement in the cold.” He smiles and turns the key once more. A promising growling thundering noise starts but finishes off sounding like a decrepit old cow farting. Not so good. “I think she’s not for going.” Mike sighs “dammit.”
“Ah well we could walk to mine I guess. Or get a taxi but gees that’ll be extortionate!”
“How long will it take to walk?”
“An hour An hour and a half? Something like that.” Jodi nods her head
“I guess it’s doable.” Mike groans. “I just don’t really feel like it.”
“What’s that noise?” Jodi remarks crinkling her eyes and nose in concentration.
It’s bells. Clearly she can hear bells and they’re getting closer and closer.
“What noise?” Mike asks but Jodi waves her hands manically at him and tells him to shush.
“Roll your window down.” She instructs “and look and see what it is.” She rolls down her window and sticks her stripy bobble hatted head out into the cold night feeling jack frost trace a pattern over her cheeks with his icy fingers. Turning her eyes to the sky she sees nothing and pulls herself back into the relative warmth (or lack of cold) of the car interior.
“Well it must be the egg nog then.”
“Ho Ho Ho I wouldn’t bet on that!” A loud booming voice proclaims from just outside of Mike’s side of the car. Jodi tilts her head to see round Mike and there sure enough is a big round jolly old fella in a red suit white fur and a big fluffy candy floss beard. That man is sat in a rather large sleigh and yes there’s sacks upon sacks of stuff in the back. To the front is a pack a heard a well a lot of reindeer pawing the ground and snorting warm blasts of steam from their nostrils.
“Well hello Santa.” Jodi is beyond shock and has gone into flippant hysteria.
“Do you two need a lift somewhere?” Santa bellows. It’s the strangest noise loud but comforting and soothing like the sound of a loved one’s car pulling up on a late night or the whinny of a friendly horse.
“Well Yes.” Jodi says taking the lead as Mike still seems stuck in “mouth gaping awe” mode. “If you wouldn’t mind.”
“Not at all hop in!” Jodi opens her door and exit’s the car Mike sits in stunned shock. Still not quite sure this is really happening and wondering if one sip of egg nog was too much.
“Come on silly.” Jodi chuckles as she pulls open his car door “Haven’t you always wanted to ride in Santa’s sleigh?”
“Well actually yeah.” Mike finds his voice as his damn it and just go for it mode kicks in. “Thanks Santa.” He adds as he helps Jodi to climb up onto the step and into the interior of the sleigh.
Jodi was amazed by how warm and comfortable it was in there and commented so to Santa
“Well it’s all down to the Elves really. They’re lovely you know always thinking of my comfort. We have some kind of mystical central heating thing going on and fur lined seats. Lovely on the bottom. Better than the old bare wood. Oooh did my bottom ache back in those days.”
With a jolly chuckle he flicks the reins and suddenly the sleigh is in the air and Mike is looking down on the bright lighted vista below.
“Wow.” Is all he manages to squeeze out as he mind tries to take it all in.
Jodi is having a whale of her time and chatting away to Merry Old St Nick as if they were long time friends. She’s always been good at adapting to things though. She’s never phased by anything and takes every moment as it comes. And a moment like this surely doesn’t come all that often.
“I hope you two don’t mind but I have a few more house calls to do before I can drop you off.” Santa smiles broadly as he quickly whips the reins once more bringing the panting reindeer to a stop.
“No problem.” Mike smiles finally enjoying the experience
“We’re in no particular rush.” Jodi backs him up.
“OK well I’ll be back in a moment” the large figure of Santa leaps out of the sleigh with surprising nimbleness roots around in amongst the sacks and finds the one he’s looking for then disappears down the closest chimney.
“Ok this is weird.” Mike smiles shaking his head.
“It is a bit.” Jodi replies “Nice of him to give us a lift though.”
“He probably likes the company.” Mike replies. “I guess it gets a bit lonely at times.”
nine antlered heads turn around and fix Mike with a disgruntled stare.
“Oh well Sorry I forgot about you guys.” he giggles nervously and they throw back the heads and snort and look back towards the chimney again.
A few stops later and Santa passes Jodi a big thermos flask. “This place is massive I’ll be gone a while. Help yourself to this. It’s Christmas Spirit. I get so much left out for me I can’t drink it all. So I save it up in here. It’s a good brew but strong. Oh and if you like.” Santa flicks down a little door like a glove compartment just in front of Mike “In there is a plate of cookies. I get lots of those too. Oh but just look out for the really home made looking ones. The little children make them themselves and well it’s cute but rarely tasty.” He chuckles again and leaps off onto the snow covered turret of the European looking castle below.
“Any Idea where the hell we are?” Jodi chirrups with a lighter soul than she’s had in a long time.
“Not a bleeding clue!” Mike replies also feeling the strange light hearted soul business and resigned to enjoying it to it’s full!
They both collapse laughing and then Jodi unscrews the cap off the old fake red tartan covered flask.
Taking a sniff she moans “That smells so good.” She moves in closer to Mike his body now pressed up along her arm “Smell.” she bids
He slips his nose just above the flask opening and moans softly too “It smells so sweet and…and good.” He could think of no other way to say it.
Jodi pours a glug into the flask and offers it to Mike who offers it back to her for the first sip.
He watches her thin but sensual lips as they clasp the edge of the plastic cup and observes the way her eyes close in enjoyment as the liquid courses down her throat. A moment later he realises why she looked so happy in that moment. Drinking this stuff was like drinking liquid joy.
“Mmmm.” he finally says. “So good.” Jodi nods her head and giggles. The small sip of Christmas spirit was
